Chicagoland Coalition Opposed to Militarization of Youth City-Wide Planning Meeting

The Chicagoland Coalition Opposed to Militarization of Youth (CCOMY) invites groups or individuals with an interest in working against the militarization of our youth to join us in a city-wide planning meeting to learn about one another’s initiatives, share experiences and resources, and facilitate the development of collaborative projects.

CCOMY is committed to raising community awareness of the prevalence and impact of military recruitment in our schools. We seek to mobilize opposition both to the militarization of youth and to its detrimental effects on education.

Demonstration Against Renaissance 2010

Save Senn contingent at the Demonstration against Renaissance 2010, Friday November 12th. Sponsored by a coalition of 20 community and labor groups including the Chicago Teachers Union, this demonstration promises to be huge! Let’s add our voice to the protest against ‘top down’ school reform in Chicago.


LABOR BEAT: Protests Against Proposed Navy Academy At Senn HS And Against Renaissance 2010

The dramatic protest against the plan to convert part of Senn High School into a Navy Academy is covered on next Thursday’s Labor Beat show. It will air on CAN TV, cable channel 19 in Chicago, at 9:30 pm. on Thursday, Nov. 4.

Senn High School is a large multi-cultural high school on Chicago’s north side, and the school community — from students, teachers, parents and local residents — stood against the plan in a meeting which included the Navy spokesperson walking out in frustration.

This Labor Beat show also covers the related story of opposition to the Renaissance 2010 plan for over 60 public schools, with interviews of spokespeople from SEIU Local 73 and Kenwood Oakland Community Organization.

Hands Around Senn
Thursday, Oct. 28th

There will be a first Hands around Senn event this Thursday, October 28th. (Another will follow on a weekend, TBA). All interested parties should gather around the building from 3:00 - 3:15 p.m., and at 3:15 form a symbolic circle in protest at the proposal to install a military high school in Senn’s already much-needed space.

A number of us are planning to go out petitioning and door-knocking in the Senn neighborhood on Monday, Oct 11th. We will meet at 5:00 PM in front of the Senn sign at 5900 N. Glenwood. Please join us!

Teachers, students, and members of the community want the CPS to know that Senn is a school on its way up, and should not be chopped up. We are calling on members of the Edgewater/Uptown neighborhoods to help us save this community resource.
